WTF: Nissan Pulsar N11 Sports-matic gear shifter

I accidentally posted this as a blog post earlier this week while it was meant as a linkdump saved as a draft. Probably I pressed the publish button instead of draft…

Anyway, I had a bit WTF when I spotted the automatic gearshift lever in this picture:

Taken from the brochure of the N11 Pulsar (aka the Datsun/Nissan Cherry here in Europe) and it states something about this being a Sports-matic mechanical auto gearbox with an electro magnetically operated clutch. You are supposed to put it in L for the first (low gear), then D for drive (up to 80km/h) as the second gear and OD (overdrive) for the top gear. Do you still get it? I don’t and that’s probably also the reason this ingenious gearshifter never made it past the N11 Pulsar. ;)

WTF: New body panels for the AE86!

This is excellent news for the three door (aka hatchback) AE86 owners: Impulse AE86 started manufacturing new back panels for the three door AE86!

Just imagine the work and effort they put into this product to reverse engineer a 30 year old complex panel like this and make it 100% identical!

WTF: Fujiwara Tofu Shop Nissan Sunny RZ-1

I’ve seen many Fujiwara Tofu Shop (private) inspired vehicles so far, but this Nissan Sunny RZ-1 B12 is done in such perfection that if the original was a Levin you had to look twice to see the difference.

Of course it does help that the Nissan Sunny RZ-1 B12 and the (kouki) Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 share the same silhouette and have a similar headlights/grill. Nevertheless I can’t recall ever seeing pictures of a panda Sunny B12.

WTF: Animated tail lights?

Jalopnik posted today a very simplistic idea/how-to about turning netbooks into animated tail lights and guess what they used as an example?

Indeed: a US/kouki Corolla GT-S AE86 tail light! I actually liked the idea that they picked Nyan Cat as the animation! :D

Is this going to be the next automotive craze? And if so, as Jalopnik states, sequential animated tail lights are legal: so why not?

Yesterdays Jalopnik’s question of the day was Who are the craziest car fans? and their list noted the Japanese Nostalgic Car fans to be the 5th craziest of them all:

If you think that new Honda owners are obsessed, you haven’t seen the crews that restore and modify classic Japanese iron. In the States and Southeast Asia they are vigilant. In Japan, they are downright unhinged.
Hey guys, what about the J-tin fans in Europe? I think us, especially the ones on the islands, are equally unhinged as our Japanese counterparts. ;)
