Friday Video: Nissan Skyline GT-R PGC10 history

There are many many many videos to be found on the Nissan Skyline GT-R PGC10 and I have seen most of them by now and most of them focus singularly on the racing history of the GT-R and/or coupe alone. That’s why I really like this particular video better than most of the others: it focuses on some of the developments done by Prince prior to the GT-R in the first part.

Mostly the development of the S20 engine contributed to the success of the Nissan Skyline GT-R PGC10 and its engine was a development effort of the Prince 380

And in the second part it also focuses on the other mechanical parts that made the Nissan Skyline GT-R an awesome car: Continue reading

Friday Video: Nissan ATTESA E-TS explained

As already posted yesterday by JNC the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 is as of today an official Japanese classic. Released on 21st of August 1989 means it is now 25 years old and legal to import to the US (about the only place on earth where it wasn’t) while in some other countries it no longer has to oblige to certain rules anymore (CO2 ratings and such).

The BNR32 Skyline was stuffed full with various electronic gadgets like the ATTESA E-TS system, SUPER HICAS 4 wheel steering and the twin-turbo PLASMA RB26DETT. Back in the 80s the Japanese car manufacturers loved acronyms!

Now if you wonder what the ATTESA E-TS system is: that basically gave the Skyline GT-R four wheel drive by splitting torque between front and rear wheels once it loses traction.

Coincidentally two days ago IKnowSkyline posted a clip taken from the Best MOTORing July 1989 edition featuring the all new BNR32 Skyline GT-R and an explanation of the the ATTESA E-TS system: Continue reading

Video: 1988 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race

Regular readers know I have a weakness for the third generation Mitsubishi Mirage (which is also known as the Mitsubishi Colt outside Japan) because it was my first car. I guess everybody has the same thing with his/her first car… So of course I was very excited to watch this ’87 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race taken from an 1988 Best Motoring video (posted on Youtube by Rocketpencil):

Of course my Colt wasn’t as quick as this the ones zooming over the circuit (mine actually featured the slowest 1.3 SOHC carb-ed engine) so I can only dream of what performance must have come out of the 4G61T powered Mirages. The specs on Wikipedia speak about the range of 200hp, so not bad for a 1.6 litre Twin Cam Turbo engine. ;)

Anyway, here is the video: Continue reading

Video: LHD Nissan Skyline 240K in Kuwait

There have been only a few places around the world that actually got LHD Nissan Skylines during the late 60s and 70s: (some countries in) Europe and the Middle East. Most Europeans did not care very much for Japanese cars and our climate isn’t that friendly to them either, so guess where you can find them nowadays…

Bingo! ;)

In the Middle East the rust monster leaves them alone and their only thread is a bunch of Kuwaitis hooning a couple of LHD Datsun 240K C110s and C210s: Continue reading

Top Gear missed it’s chance with the Toyota Comfort GT-Z!

Today I watched the second episode of the new Top Gear season (season 20 already!) where Hammond organized a Taxi race. In this race he featured taxis from various countries like Russia, India, South Africa but for some reason he left out Japan. Now this is a missed chance as Japan would have an adequate contentder:
Toyota Comfort GT-Z Supercharged SXS10
Okay, the supercharged 3S-FE may not be the most powerful of the whole bunch, but with its tweaked suspension it probably would have beaten the competition in half a lap… Or could it be that they were actually frightened?

See the full video of the Comfort GT-Z here: Continue reading
