Brochures: Datsun Sunny Mario 120Y

The Mario character from Nintendo appeared for the first time in the Donkey Kong game that got released in 1981. So how could Mario show up on the inside of this 1975 Dutch Datsun Sunny 120Y brochure?
Super Mario Datsun Sunny 120Y
Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, never acknowledged anything about the origin of the character and the wildest stories have been told. Could it perhaps be modelled after this Datsun Sunny 120Y character?

The page shown above is taken from a Dutch brochure that is in typical mid 70s style: Continue reading

Commercial Time: Nissan Sunny and Stanza ad goof up

This 1983 Nissan Sunny B11 ad is a real gem: 30-ish female person is tied up on a half sunken boat and almost gets eaten by an inflatable rubber alligator while two bad guys in white suits and white hats (both a Panama) watch it happen and cheer on the inflatable rubber alligator:
Commercial Time: Nissan Sunny B11
Then she shouts for help from Sunny and a Nissan Sunny B11 Turbo sedan rushes in and the guy saves the day.

This obviously would make a fine commercial in Japan in the early 80s and would make a horrible vintage cult classic nowadays. However keep in mind that in the very same year Nissan promoted the Nissan Stanza T11 in Japan with the following family in a Stanza:
Commercial Time: Nissan Stanza T11
Yes, both father and son are wearing the very same white suits and very same white hats (also both a Panama).

You can watch both videos below: Continue reading

Down on the Street: Nissan Sunny GTi-R N14

I found this beautiful Nissan Sunny GTi-R N14 parked in the town next to my hometown.

I actually returned to the “scene of the crime” to take photos of a Nissan Silvia S14 I spotted a half year earlier but I lacked to bring a camera back then. So I was quite surprised to find this GTi-R parked on the same spot!

I actually spotted a white Sunny GTi-R before on the Wangan Warriors 10 meeting but it is not the same car. So I was lucky to spot a second one of these great little cars!

Yes it is a genuine GTi-R: Continue reading

JAF 2013: RWD from the 70s

There wasn’t that many 70s cars around at the Japanse Autosport Festival. Probably got to do with the fact that anything sporty from the 70s nowadays is tucked away in a museum.
JAF 2013: Mitsubishi Celeste
This Mitsubishi Celeste also looked like it belonged in a museum. Period correct number on the license plate and it looked almost as stunning as the Mitsubishi Cordia! And of course this one is based on the Galant A70 series, so it is rear wheel drive!

Another stunning looker was this track prepped Sunny B110: Continue reading

WTF: Fujiwara Tofu Shop Nissan Sunny RZ-1

I’ve seen many Fujiwara Tofu Shop (private) inspired vehicles so far, but this Nissan Sunny RZ-1 B12 is done in such perfection that if the original was a Levin you had to look twice to see the difference.
Initial D Nissan Sunny RZ-1 B12
Of course it does help that the Nissan Sunny RZ-1 B12 and the (kouki) Toyota Corolla Levin AE86 share the same silhouette and have a similar headlights/grill. Nevertheless I can’t recall ever seeing pictures of a panda Sunny B12.

Japanse Autosport Festival: Traffic jams and parking lot

As promised: lots of pictures are coming up!

The day started early somewhere in Hilversum where we met up at Jack’s place at 7:30. I was perfectly on time for a change, but stupidly enough I forgot to bring along my tickets and had to go home and print them out another time. Then after 45 minutes of driving we arrived in Zandvoort and encountered this near the gate of the circuit:
There is a long line of cars...
It took us another 45 minutes to actually reach the gates. :o

This also meant one of the cars in our group ran into a little bit of trouble when its radiator hose snapped: Continue reading
