Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Commerical time: 1979 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma seats

I think Mitsubishi did an excellent comparison in this CM:

Benz, BMW, Mitsubishi Galant Sigma!

And I found another one:

Somehow during the late 70s and early 80s the Japanese had the impression that the best car seats should be as soft and fluffy as possible. I have no idea how these Galant Sigma seats actually sit, but I had the pleasure to sit in both those Benz and BMW seats in the past and they were actually very comfortable. I could not say the same about the 1990 Mitsubishi Colt seats I sat on during a 1600 kilometer vacation… My personal experience actually is that the harder the seats, the more comfortable they get on the longer distance travels.

Soft and fluffy seats? No thanks! ;)

WTF: Mitsubishi Pajero Jr Flying Pug

This was really a big WTF for me:
Mitsubishi Pajero Jr Flying Pug - WTF?!
Mitsubishi Pajero Jr Flying Pug – WTF?!

No, it is not a modern London cab! And it is not a Riley Elf retro car based upon the new mini! (the old Elf was based upon the old one). No, it is the Mitsubishi Pajero Flying Pug!

Mitsubishi thought a downsized Pajero would create a great mini SUV. So they created the Pajero Jr in 1995. Unfortunately sales were not booming as they expected them to be, so they tried to sell them through some limited editions. The names were as insane as the thought of people willing to buy limited edition mini SUVs: McTwist, Lynx and Flying Pug!
Back in the early nineties the English retro looks were very popular, so Mitsubishi thought the Pajero Jr Flying Pug would sell great when styled after a London cab with big wide fenders and a big Mercedes-like hood ornament! Boy, they were wrong! Sales still declined and the whole Pajero Jr was killed off in 1998.

The rear has’t changed at all, except for the tail lights. They must have thought the retro styling of the front would have been appealing enough?

And the interior doesn’t show any luxury at all: just an ordinary plain ninties plastic interior with leather seats.

This particular Pajero Jr is one of the 149 Pajero Jrs produced in 1998 and thus incredibly rare. It can be yours for only 8000 dollars while an ordinary Jr can be picked up for 100 to 1000 dollars. At least I wouldn’t spend that amount of money on it. ;)

510hp Mitsubishi Colt swaps its own engine

It is always great to see footage of engine swaps, but seeing/hearing a car swap its own engine is just one step further!

Great to see the Mitsubishi Colt can actually be very very fast and then…clunk!
Oh oh! That wasn’t good… :D
Ah well, that could have been expected if you go too far with a standard transmission…

This also brings back memories of my first car: a Mitsubishi Colt 1.3. This car is a bit more impressive than the one I used to own: the engine is supposed to output 510hp helped with the aid of a turbo. That is about nine times as much as mine did!

Makes me wonder though: according to the Dutch car registration database my old car still drives around. Bizarre: I sold it four years ago and already thought the next owner would scrap it within a year. So if you are the owner of a Mitsubishi Colt with registration YD-50-TG you are driving a car I gave up upon four years ago! :D
