Be a dingo in this Mitsubishi Mirage Dingo! – Commercial Time

When I watched a compilation of 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage Dingo ads I thought it was quite strange. It wasn’t just the fact that the styling got bland after the facelift, but also the choice for the Dingo name. If you are unfamiliar with the dingo, a dingo is an Australian dog. So what’s so strange about naming a family car a Dingo then? Let me explain!

Why you shouldn’t use Dingo as a name

First of all, there is a very famous dingo we all know and love. His name is Goofy and he’s Mickey’s best friend. The issue with Goofy is…well, he’s goofy! He’s not the brightest, he’s clumsy and he often messes up things. So naming your car a dingo might be a bit clumsy.

Regular readers know I have a weakness for the third generation Mitsubishi Mirage (which is also known as the Mitsubishi Colt outside Japan) because it was my first car. I guess everybody has the same thing with his/her first car… So of course I was very excited to watch this ’87 Mitsubishi Mirage cup race taken from an 1988 Best Motoring video (posted on Youtube by Rocketpencil):

Of course my Colt wasn’t as quick as this the ones zooming over the circuit (mine actually featured the slowest 1.3 SOHC carb-ed engine) so I can only dream of what performance must have come out of the 4G61T powered Mirages. The specs on Wikipedia speak about the range of 200hp, so not bad for a 1.6 litre Twin Cam Turbo engine. ;)

DOTS: 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage

For the non-European readers this Mitsubishi Mirage (aka Colt and Cyborg) Coupe ‘CC’ may not be that special, but for us Europeans it is quite an unfamiliar car.

The two door coupe was basically a model between the 3 door hatch and the four door sedan, but never made it to the European shores. This blue 1993 Mirage has been on the Continental shores since 1994, so it only spent one year on the other side of the ocean.

For us it is a bit weird to see a bootlid instead of hatchback between these two rear lights!

But apart from that it looks pretty much the same as an ordinary Colt ‘CC’.
