JDM Trivia: Mitsubishi Galant Σ and Nissan Gazelle crossover?

While browsing for photos of a non-disclosed car model (coming up) I stumbled upon a photo of a Mitsubishi Galant Σ (sigma) on Minkara that looked a bit odd:
Mitsubishi Galant double square headlights
The shape was right, but those headlights and grille really look the same as the Nissan Gazelle S110 units!

So I double checked with a Gazelle S110 I featured a long time ago:

The corner lights are different, but this is a kouki (late) model and the zenki (early) model did feature full orange corner lights. Apart from that it does look very similar!

And this is the common Mitsubishi Galant Σ we all are familiar with: Continue reading

Japanese Rustoseums: the very rare junkyard

From various sources (like WasabiCars) I understood that finding a junkyard in Japan is very rare. There are some private yards that are mostly owned by garage owners and use the cars in the yard as spare parts. When I saw this photo of a real junkyard on a Japanese blog I couldn’t believe what I saw:
Japanese Rustoseums: the rare junkyard
In this big pile of rust I detected: a Mercury Cougar, a four door Toyota Chaser X30, a Mitsubishi Galant Λ (aka the Mitsubishi/Plymouth Sapporo and Dodge Challenger), a Toyota Celica A60 (maybe an XX?), a Nissan Skyline C210, a Toyota Corona T130, a Toyota Crown MS50 and the nicest of them all: a Toyota Publica van.

Brochures: French Eterna Sigma in Spain

For some reason during the 80s the Japanese liked to portrait their cars in a foreign habitat, like they needed approval from the old world. The same happened to this 1980 Mitsubishi Eterna ?:
1980 Mitsubishi Eterna Sigma brochure
This Eterna ? is on French plates (Paris), RHD and portrayed next to a Spanish farmer and his mule (Sancho Panza) and against the Don Quixote white windmills.
What were they trying to say? That the Eterna Sigma is capable of attacking the giants (windmills)? Or that the Japanese advanced technology wise more than the Spanish (and the old world)? And why is the lady on the right drinking coffee? I honestly don’t know…

Japanse Autosport Festival: the classics

I think many of you have waited for this: the classics at the Japanse Autosport Festival!

The best classic on the terrain was this original Dutch 1977 Honda Civic SB parked in the parkinglot:

As you can see it is in perfect condition and I could not find a spec of rust on it. It also has been fitted with a set of periodically correct vintage alloys.

The only comment I can give is that it was missing one small thing: Continue reading

Car feature: Bulgarian Galant Sigma Hardtop CS Extra

Dido posted a comment under a post I wrote about the Mitsubishi Galant Sigma that he owns one. So I followed the links and found his Facebook page which is scattered with images of his pride and joy:
Bulgarian Misubishi Galant Sigma Hardtop CS Extra
Naturally it is an import, but it is actually no one else than the Japanese Ambassador who brought it to Bulgaria! But the previous owners thought it was junk and did no maintenance on it and left it for four years in a field. That’s when Dido bought the car.

It is just amazing how much switchgear you can mount in a car: Continue reading

Galant Sigma Hardtop CS Extra

Remember the Galant Sigma Eterna I featured in the commercial time some time ago? It had also a commercial showing the Cyclone engine, so how about a video which allows you to hear that engine?

This Mitsubishi Sigma 2000 Hardtop CS Extra included the 2 liter 6G71 Cyclone engine. Super smooth two liter engine and with all the extras this car is an amazing achievement in engineering!

Also look at all that weird switch gear! Only manufacturer coming near to that was Citroen.

Even though the car looks great, is a super smooth ride, I still wouldn’t like to own it: it is not old enough. ;)

edit: forgot to add the videos! Added them now!
