Drive on the Tokyo Expressway KK-line (1986 versus 2024) – Friday Video

My favourite Showa-nostalgic Youtube channel Kamepo posted another video: the two-kilometer-long Tokyo Expressway KK-line. The Tokyo Expressway has a rich history and already dates back to 1951 when the first plans were drawn up. In 1959 the first section opened up and it was fully opened up in 1966.

Kamepo describes in the video that most of the expressway is built on top of commercial buildings or that the commercial buildings have been built underneath it. The 1960s were definitely strange times!

Highlights

As this section of road is only 2 kilometres in length, there aren’t that many cars to spot. Unlike my usual spotting, I have also included some cars from the opposite lane. I normally omit to spot these because they are very difficult and hard to distinguish as the frames get very blurry.

Yet still I managed to find a couple of highlights: a diesel powered Nissan Cedric or Gloria 430 wagon, a Nissan Cedric Y30 taxi, a duo of Toyota Carina A60s, a Honda N-WGN and a Nissan Skyline Ti C210/C211.

My favourite Showa-nostalgic Youtube channel Kamepo posted another video: the Shuto Expressway on the Shunjuku route. This time you get a comparison between 1993 and 2024 and there are a lot of interesting cars to spot!

Highlights

The highlights of this video are a Mazda RX7 FD on a flatbed, a French Citroën BX GTi 8v, two Toyota Prius-es (or Priora in Latin) XW50 and XW60, a Subaru BRZ ZD8, an Autozam Revue and also a Honda Integra coupé DA5.

I’ve featured Kamepo‘s amazing side-by-side videos a few times before and this week he outdid himself with a side-view video of the Tokyo Monorail! It’s taking a drive on the Shuto Expressway route 1, where the monorail follows the route side-by-side.

Highlights

There are only a total of 16 cars to spot in this video as its total length is only 3 minutes. I think, in addition to the monorail, the double E-class, Toyota Stout, Nissan Laurel C32 and Toyota Sprinter Carib are the highlights of this video.

Drive on the Shuto expressway K1 and K5 (1989 versus 2024) – Friday Video

I’ve featured Kamepo‘s amazing side-by-side videos a few times before, but never have I seen one that amazed me more than this one! It’s taking a drive on the Shuto expressway K1 and K5. This is a drive from Ota to Daikoku Futo and then over the Yokohama Bay bridge. If that wasn’t wild enough, the 1989 footage was shot early morning on the first of January. In Tokyo it’s a custom to watch the first sunset and the Yokohama Bay bridge is plastered with cars of people watching this!

Highlights

Here are some of the highlights I found in this video: Daikoku Futo, USS Yokohama, a Nissan Skyline 2000GT C10, six Toyota Carina ED T160, a hotrod Mitsubishi Debonair, a Corona coupé T140 and a yellow Mazda RX-7 FD3S.

A drive through Otsuka and Koishikawa – Friday Video

This week Kamepo posted a new video of a side-by-side drive through the Otsuka and Koishikawa districts in Tokyo. I had no clue where exactly this is, but according to the map, this is part of Bunkyo and nearby the Shuto Expressway C1. That means it can’t be too far away from the centre, right?

According to the various sources I read, the Otsuka neighbourhood is transforming itself into an area with a mix of traditional Japanese culture and modern foreign influence. It’s also the last place in Tokyo where you can find tram lines. This tram line, the Toden Arakawa Line, is unfortunately not on the route driven by Kamepo.

The Koishikawa area is known for the Koishikawa Korakuen garden which hosts beautiful plum and cherry blossoms in springtime. It’s also hosting various University buildings including the University of Tokyo, which also takes care of a large botanical garden. The drive will pass the University at 3:30 in the video and the botanical garden at 4:35.

This video of driving through the Tokyo Sendagi area in 1989 synchronized with a drive in 2023 is another amazing video by Kamepo! Last week I posted another one where he drives over the Shuto Expressway C1. In that video there were a few interesting cars, but today I found an enormous amount of interesting cars! So let’s start to identify them!
