Drifting in the 90s

After last Saturday’s Advan Racing intro I watched some more 90s footage.

I found some footage of drift events from the early 90s till the late 90s. They really show that drifting is something new and something that could only be done by practically anyone! If you hear the amount applause for every one of the drivers you really start to wonder why on earth we have a judging system for D1GP! ;)

First video is covering 1990/1991:

Big LOL @1:18. Saw that one coming from miles away! :D
And @1:32 a Carina AA63 Policecar replica!
As you can see, the 180SX @2:25 is brand new and doing a great job. Really skillfully drifted around the corners and way above the rest of the drivers. Note that this is Orido Manabu’s 180SX! You can see the young Orido start to cry when he wins his first victory ever! Shortly after this victory he leaves drifting and enters serious racing in Fuji freshman class.

Second video is covering 1991/1992/1993:

In this video you see the drift events getting bigger and getting more and more professional. Cars are not old clunckers anymore and are getting nice and fresh aerodynamic performance parts.

Then the third video fast forwards to the late 90s, 1997-1999:

All of a sudden all drivers are more skilled than before: they won’t make big mistakes anymore. Their entry speeds are much higher and their lines are much better! And now it makes much more sense to have a judging system to determine which drivers are better than others…

Hilarious: Daijiro Inada can’t drift!

Imagine this: you are the founder of a very big video Magazine about drifting, you created your own drifting challenge, organize several big car shows, know most tuners and drifters in the world, but there is one problem: you can’t drift!

In this video he just smashes the whole rear end of his drift missile Silvia S13 in the sidewall and manages to eat some dust after going too wide in an easy corner.

Ah well, I probably wouldn’t do any better than him in the D1SL (and not even in any other event!) and besides that: I still have the most respect for the man who done it all!

Video: Ken Nomura versus …

The title of the video was already spoiling the surprise so I won’t post that title here… But you will probably see the title when playing the video anyway.

Anyway, enjoy the following video:

First a couple of nice drift cars going sideways, a few cars being inspected on the paddock, including an AE86 Levin with a turbo-ed 4AGZE smallport (with bluetop valve covers) and then… bang! WTF?? :D :D

“showinfo=0” in the url did the trick: so no more title in the video!!

Tokyo Matter (Cars)

I saw this movie posted on Twitter by Chris Rhoads today. On one side you can see it as a spoof on Tokyo Drift, on the other side you can see it as “hopping on the bandwagon” for Cars:

It is still quite entertaining, especially guessing on which models the cars are based. My best guess is that the blue Japanese saloon is supposed to be a Crown S120 or S130 and the bad guy a Silvia S15. I also did spot a few bosozoku/dekotora like styled vans. Funny to see all the Police cars are modern Crowns! ;)

Hilarious: Dorifuto Otoko?

I found this funny video from Dreamcar Club featuring anime painted cars. Not that anime painted cars are particularly humorous, but rather their owners: each one of them really looks like the guy from Densha Otoko. For people who did not watch the movie or series: he’s a real otaku and you can find an a picture of Densha Otoko here.

As you probably have seen most of the cars on this meeting are sportscars: Nissan Silvias (S14/S15), Nissan Skylines, etc. Apparently those otaku have lots of cash to spend upon cars and vinyl decals! Must be different than auto otaku who spend their cash upon upgrades, tires and gas!

The cars of the interviewed persons are all rear wheel drive: the yellow Nissan Silvia S15, the white Toyota Comfort taxi and the white Toyota Mark II GX81. With their powers combined they could become: Dorifuto Otoko! (insert echo here!)

5th gear on drifting

I’ve become a bit of a 5th gear fan since Discovery Channel is broadcasting it around “just got out of work” time in the Netherlands. So I was just watching a few videos on drifting by 5th gear.

Just compare these two videos by 5th gear:

And this one:

I suspect the first video is dated from somewhere near 2002 or 2003 and the second video is dated from 2007. Just look how much drifting has changed in those 4 or 5 years! The winning car of the first video would have been blown away by the Soarer Tiff Needell is driving in 2007!
