Why did the 1985 Nissan March Turbo feature this hybrid cluster? – Deepdive

1985 was the peak of the digital gauge clusters. When digital gauge clusters were introduced with the Aston Martin Lagonda in 1976 they were a luxurious feature. However, by the early 1980s, Toyota already launched their Soarer with a similar digital gauge cluster. Toyota being Toyota, copied their new technology to other upmarket cars like the Chaser, Cresta, Mark II, Celica, Carina and Corona. Soon other brands, like Nissan, followed suit and also featured digital gauge clusters in their top models. By the mid-1980s these digital gauge clusters had trickled down to even the smallest commuter cars like the Honda City and the Nissan March. The gauge cluster of the Nissan March is what we feature today!

Amazing auction find: a Toyota Celica Supra MA61 wall clock

Oh my. I posted this Celica Supra MA61 wall clock video already two months ago on Youtube! Time to do some catching up again!

My Carina Digital Dashboard wallclock

I have covered this Carina digital dashboard clock in a video some time ago. It is an amazingly rare item that you hardly ever come by, and it took me six long years before I found another one!

What about a Celica Supra Digital Dashboard wallclock?

Since Toyota has made a clock for the Carina, naturally you would expect Toyota to have made similar items for other models. And of course they did: I found this Toyota Celica XX (also known as the Toyota Celica Supra MA61 outside Japan) wall clock for sale on Yahoo Auctions for the mere price of 28000 yen! (about 250 US dollars!) See the video below: Continue reading

Brilliant: Nissan Leopard F31 digital dashboard

Okay I admit that I love digital dashboards and I surely do love this Nissan Leopard F31 dashboard!

If you look at the complexity of it Nissan must have spent a fortune on getting these LCD displays fault free. ;)

The boot-up test sequence shows about everything the display can show you:

Not much more than the most necessary gauges but sufficient enough for a Gran Turismo like the Nissan Leopard F31

Brilliant: Toyota Carina GT-TR digital dashboard

As a follow up on yesterdays Mitsubishi Starion digital dashboard post I wanted to show the difference with the Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63 digital dashboard:
Toyota Carina GT-TR TA63 Digital Dashboard
As I wrote yesterday: the Starion dashboard has a lot more gauges than the Toyota counterpart, but the Toyota digital dashboard is a lot brighter with many more LEDs. On the left you can see the failure indicators (including oil pressure, oil temperature and voltage) and the indicator if the turbo is boosting or not. On the right you can see the fuel gauge and water temperature gauge as LEDs. A lot brighter than the Starion indeed.

Now if you compare the digital dashboard with the analogue below you immediately can see the difference: the analogue has an extra oil pressure gauge and features all the failure indicators on the right.

Just like the Starion, you can see the Toyota Carina GT-TR digital dashboard in action below: Continue reading

Brilliant: Mitsubishi Starion digital dashboard

Back in the early 80s Japanese car manufacturers were convinced that the digital dashboard was the way to make a car to look computerized and modern. Digital readouts and meters were to be found in most of the top of the line models, like the Toyota Celica XX, Toyota Soarer, Nissan Leopard. Mitsubishi did the same: they added a digital dashboard to the Mitsubishi Starion GSR:

The design of the dashboard is really nice and all readouts are clear in one overview: fuel, water temperature, oil pressure, tachometer and spedometer. Even though not all of them are digital, they are all there.

Now a static image doesn’t sell that well so here is a nice video of the dashboard in action:

Carina Sightings: Digital Cluster at Ebay

Rovin sent me a message that he is selling a JDM digital cluster for the Carina A60 on Ebay:
Digital Cluster for the Carina
Digital Cluster for the Carina

Just like the other top of the line early 80s cars by Toyota, the Carina got a digital cluster as well. It all started with the 1981 Toyota Soarer, then it passed on to the 1982 Toyota Celica XX, the 1982 Toyota Carina, 1982 Toyota Crown S110 and later on in the 1983 Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. Note that all cars (except the AE86) were released with a digital dash before the worlld was introduced with the digital dashboard from Knight Rider! ;)

Anyway, Rovin is selling this rare (optional) digital dashboard for the Carina A60, and it even includes the necessary connectors:

From experience with the AE86 digital cluster I can say that you also would need a digital fuel sender and a digital oil pressure sensor to make it work. Nevertheless I’d say it is a very fine upgrade for your Carina! If only I had the money for it…
