Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Commerical time: Hakosuka commuter

Fourty two years ago there was a businessman returning home from his work in his new shiney Nissan Skyline GC10. Judging from the short nose it is almost certainly powered by the G-15:

It is also funny to see the comparison with the Japanese Grand Prix winning Nissan R381 #20. That would certainly be a good reason to wear those leather gloves during daily commute. ;)

Commerical time: Yes, be pop with your Corsa!

When I saw this commercial my first thought was that the title was wrong: it looks like a zenki AE86 Sprinter Trueno front end in the first seconds, but then I saw the rear… Oh my… That resembled the third generation Daihatsu Charade!

Yes, be pop with your Corsa! Or Tercel for the non-Japanese residents!

This third generation Corsa featured a 3E-TELU powered GP Turbo model that was clearly marketed as a little sister of the Trueno. In power it actually may have been (almost) equal to the AE86, but it drivetrain was unfortunate in the 80s FF fashion… Otherwise it may have been a candidate to be the Starlet KP61 sucessor!

Commerical time: Nissan Coupe Rz-1

I always liked the looks of the Nissan Sunny B12: sleek, boxy, fast and still looking normal enough to be a wolf in sheeps clothing! In Japan they were marketed as the Nissan Coupe Rz-1 which sounds a lot more 80s in my ears than the Sunny Coupe.

Somehow it may sound funny, but this commercial made me laugh: my Down on the Street regular started with a Nissan Sunny B12 used by a window cleaner and imagine this streamlined commercial with a big ladder on top of the car!

Commerical time: Mazda Chantez, Chantez, Lalalalalaaa

Back in 1961 everybody loved the good old Mazda Carol P360: it was small, lights and the first four passenger car made by Mazda! What better replacement could be expected than the 1972 Mazda Chantez?

Still powered by the 359 two cylinder two-stroke engine and its mighty 35hp this ultralight RWD rocket must have been a hoot to drive! ;)

Now if only that song could have been a different one!
Chantez, chantez, lalalalalaaa! Chantez, chantez, lalalalalaaa!
I think it is in my head now… :(
