Is this AE86 heaven or hell? – Japanese Rustoseums

Seeing a rusty AE86 is always sad, but seeing five makes me wonder whether this place in Japan is AE86 heaven or hell. Welcome to another Japanese Rustoseum post!

Wrecked zenki panda three-door Sprinter Trueno GT Apex AE86

Let’s start with the first one. This is a presumably late-1984 or early-1985 white panda zenki Trueno GT Apex 3-door that has suffered from some accident damage. The front has been caved in, which means it’s probably a write-off. I think it’s a GT Apex as it does feature the bucket sports seats, and panda paint and doesn’t seem to have an areal on the right fender.

Pre-production Corolla Levin SE AE85 – Friday Video

One of the highlights of this year was a WhatsApp call from Daniel ‘O Grady out of the blue about an early Corolla Levin SE AE85 he found. I was doing my usual Saturday groceries and just parked my car in a parking garage. Daniel was very agitated about this car as it had such a low frame number.

During the call, it dawned on me that such a low frame number meant it was actually a pre-production run. Last year I created an overview of the AE86 and AE85 frame numbers and a lookup function. One of the things that surprised me was that the AE85 production in May 1983 started at 180, while AE86 production started at 1. There are no records of the pre-180 frame numbers in the EPC either. This means these cars have been assembled in pre-production.

AE86 Trivia: AE86 and AE85 Gauge clusters

Earlier I featured the AE86 GT-Apex Digi Dash and obviously it raises many AE86 enthusiasts hearts. This time I’d like to feature the normal AE86 cluster versus the AE85 cluster.
AE86 Trivia header

If you ever owned an AE86 (or watched too much Initial D) this cluster should be quite familar:
AE86 Trivia: Toyota Levin AE86 gauge cluster
It is the standard JDM kouki AE86 cluster for RHD cars. Difference between the kouki and zenki cluster are the the white vertical lines and white needles that replaced the old orange needles.
Difference between JDM and UKDM gauge cluster is the speedo that reaches 150mph (240km/h). Unfortunately I haven’t found a picture of that cluster yet…

Difference between JDM and continental EUDM gauge cluster is the mirrored layout and speedo that reaches 240 km/h. Continue reading

Japanese rustoseums (part two)

Time for some more Japanese rustoseums:

This rusty beaten up Carina GT-TR was found here.

I posted this rusty Corolla Levin AE85 before on hachiroku.com.au. It is painted in the infamous colorcode 879 and it has got a nice pair of fender mirrors! ;)

Rusty Toyota Starlet KP61
Rusty Toyota Starlet KP61

This KP61 Starlet interested me: it is sitting in a junkyard and yet it has a set of Watanabe rims! Who would throw out a pair of wats?
Also funny to see the foliage coming out of the grille! First thought is always that the foliage must have been picked up during a ride, but in reality it is just growing from under the car!

It wasn’t planned to make this a Toyota only rustoseum posting, but next time I’ll make it up by posting only non-Toyota rustoseums!
