Remembering Japanese cars from the past
This is probably the most awkward picture I posted so far… It is not only the farting bit but also to have to post such an uncomfortable picture with a Toyota Carina AA63:
I guess this one is just a combination of bad luck and wrong timing…

Back in the early 90s I loved BMWs and especially the looks of the BMW E31 and even the “poor mans” 840Ci had a (back then) potent 286hp V8 in it… In the late 90s I refound myself and started to like the Japanese cars more, especially Toyotas and Nissans… I think this video sums up my own reflection perfectly:
The poor Beemer is chased down this tiny circuit by a big swarm of AE86s (sounds like a swarm of wild bees), a AA63 Carina and a Laurel C35 Toyota Chaser JZX100!

I did post some videos of kinloud before, but I just stumbled upon a video of his Carina in 2006:
It looks like the same AA63 he is currently driving but this one has got a 3SGE under its bonnet. As expected you can see his Carina can’t keep up with the Evo when accelerating but it surely doesn’t loose sight of the Evo. Also later on you can see the Carina stay behind on the straight parts of the track. However in cornering it is clear that the Carina has the better setup and I must say his own driving skills don’t lack much either! :)
I haven’t seen many red Carinas so far… Of course I’ve seen the infamous Carina Firevan, but not a factory red Carina…
About three weeks ago Kyteler sent me an email about a red Carina for sale at the Toyspeed.org.nz forums:

Lucky enough Roman posted the same Carina at AEU86.
The Carina itself looks good if you consider its age and mileage:

The car is already 24 years old and an average of 11k kilometers per year. The car travelled 270000 kilometers so far!

According to the seller the hood (and fender) have been repainted prior to his ownership. Most probably with a roller or a brush…
The engine may look good from the outside:

But from the inside it is not that great anymore: blue smoke is seen when cold started or put under stress. In other words: either rebuild the engine or put in a new one. I’d go for the new one: rebuilding a 270k engine doesn’t make much sense. ;)

The interior still looks amazing after 270k!
If you consider all the extras (14×6 Work Equip 01 wheels, torsen LSD, 4 new Monroe Shocks and a spare boot lid) the car is not that expensive for an asking price of $2000! (2800 NZ dollars)
