Remembering Japanese cars from the past

Hilarious: Japanese custom cars

A popular Japanese TV show called Sokon Tokoro featured a couple of fantastic wacky custom cars last week:

The first car is the George Tokoro’s (the TV show host) Subaru R1 badged as a Ferrari. Not very hot. :(
But then a large line of wacky customs arrive around the corner of the stadium:
– A 1994 Cadillac limo lowrider limo with plush pink interior. The paint joib contains 11 colors!
– A dragster disguised as a tank! It is powered by jet engine capable of pushing more than 25000 hp! Even the fireproof camera can’t stand its blast! It can reach a speed of 400 km/h!
– A factory stock Campagna T-REX, but for people who do not know this bike it is certainly wacky! ;)

The second video:

More bizarre cars:
– A BMW E66 which at first sight looks quite normal. Then the Buddhist priest gets out and shows the trunk is decorated with sutras written in Swarovski crystals!
– The priest also owns this Toyota Celsior with gullwings, scissor doors and a split hood and way too many displays! Even the headrests have display panels (to watch with the eyes in the back of your head!)
– A Dekotora van with a Batman theme.
– A 1981 Daihatsu Hijet with a Rocket launcher on its back. The rocket does work and is propelled as an ordinary water-rocket!
– A replica of the Earth Defence Force’s Pointer from the Ultra Seven TV series showed in the late 1960s. The car itself is based upon the original car it was made of: the 1967 Chrysler Imperial.
– A Hitachi ASTACO of the Tokyo Fire Department immitating a giant crablike monster!

IMO they missed one car/owner in this video: Daisuke Shouten's Bosozoku styled Toyota Celsior UCF11 vip car

Hilarious: Keiichi owns Daijiro

During the Tokyo Drift exhibition in Odaiba Keiichi Tsuchiya drives a mazda FC3S convertible with Daijiro Inada riding shotgun. Tsuchiya loses control over the mazda (that hardly ever happens!) and crashes into the tirewall:

If you look closely in the slowmotion replay you can see Keiichi braces himself against the impact while Daijiro (not wearing a seatbelt) didn’t see it coming and is squashed like a fly against the front window. ?????

Hilarious: Race with clutch in Neutral?

Starter button pulled out? Race with clutch in Neutral? Push the starter button after you drove the car?

You may wonder what gibberish this is… Well, I can explain it with a very simple picture:
1974 Daihatsu Max start instructions
1974 Daihatsu Max start instructions

Kyteler from Retro Classics found these great instructions on a sticker on the door of the 1974 Daihatsu (Fellow) Max he bought last week.

Weird sentences I found so far:
…(don’t depress the accelerator pedal)…: ok, won’t do that. Will tell the accelerator pedal only cheerful stories then! (???)
…starter button pulled out fully…: shouldn’t that be choke? ?(????)
After you race a few times with the clutch in neutral…: Race the car with the clutch in neutral? How am I supposed to do that? Accelerate really fast on the straight and then press the clutch and do a couple of laps?
Immediately after you drive the vehicle, push the starter button completely: huh? Is it running Microsoft Windows or something?

And this sticker is not the only weird thing about this car! [???]
Head over to Retro Classics to see more pictures of his 1974 Daihatsu Max!

Hilarious: Autobacs ads

Last week we already featured a tokusatsu video of Robot Keiji K and this week we have another tokusatsu video:

It is a wacky Autobacs tokusatsu ad called GO! GO! Autobacs! (???)

If you thought that was wacky, what about this Autobacs ad?

Or this one?

Lucky enough not all Autobacs ads are as wacky as these! Some are even dead serious, horribly boring and targeted at mid-level salarymen!

But I also found some horrible 80s Autobacs ads. Can’t wait to post those! (???)

p.s. Happy birthday Olivér!

Hilarious: Robot Keiji K

I found this video with the first 10 minutes of one episode of the 26 made of the great tokusatsu series called Robot Keiji K (Robot Detective K):

It starts in every aspect as a typically tokusatsu intro: the bombastic music, the heroic singing together with all the action shots and poses. It starts with the futuristic looking rocketcar and squeeling tires and the robot stepping out and flashing the series title with its eye! :D

In every way this Robot Keiji K looks like an English dandy when stepping out of that car. What was the purpose of that? To make him look like a gay robot? I can’t imagine the production company (Toei Company Ltd) going for that image in 1972… Maybe they wanted to make him look like a good guy this way? Are all good guys looking like English dandies during the 70s?

Also the car looks great: a modified Fairlady Z S30 modified to an estate with gullwing doors and rockets. Who ever thought gullwing doors look bad on Japanese sportscars anyway?

The special effects look awesome! Like someone drew them with a big white marker on the filmroll! And that clay animation of the bad robot catching the Crown MS50 is amazing! Not to mention bump-flying the rocket car into a baloon! :D

And it has got a great storyline, to quote Wikipedia:
The hero of this series is a robot named “Robot Detective K” (or just “K”), who has no human form, but when not in battle, dresses up in human clothes and has a human-like personality

Also looking at this small part makes me suspect both Paul Verhoeven and Robert Zemeckis stole some of their greatest ideas from this series! Paul Verhoeven clearly shaped his Robocop after Robot Keiji K and Robert Zemeckis copied the idea of flying sportscars when he created Back to the Future! However in Robocop the robot with a human brain while Robot Keiji K is fully a robot without any emotion. And the flying Delorean was less impressive than travelling back in time…

Anyway: I want MORE! :D :D
Anyone got more episodes of this great series?

Hilarious: Clarkson Island

After watching this hilarious video by Harry and Paul I could not watch the latest episode of Top Gear anymore without thinking about…..pausing in the middle…..of the sentences!

The whole Z car battle of last Monday just looked silly compared against the Miata and Quattroporte comparison by Harry and Paul @2:40…

Ooowwwmygawd…..now that was funny!
