Family Album Treasures: so much wow from Toyota!

Toyota launched their latest campaign at the Tokyo Motor Show 2015 today and it is called What wows you?. For the introduction video of this new campaign they used various photos that I often label here as Family Album Treasures: aged photos of people posing in front of their pride and joy that could literally be taken out of their family albums.

Surprisingly the photos used in the video aren’t all made by Toyota: the first shot even portraits a BMW 5 series and later in the video there are a Mazda Familia (BH) and VW Beetle to be seen. But of course the majority of the photos are all Toyotas.

Family Album Treasures: Mazda Cosmo AP Student

The Mazda Cosmo AP is one of the best looking cars that Mazda produced during the 70s. Its lines consist out of both American and English lines mashed together and its rotary engine reflects the German and Japanese techno-craze.

No wonder this owner drove a Mazda Cosmo AP during his studies in the 80s!

The car had a sad ending: it got driven into a canal in the Ehime Prefecture when the owner tried to avoid a head-on collision.

It all started with buying a brand new red tekkamen Nissan Skyline RS two door hardtop coupe in 1983.

Family Album Treasures: Calsonic Skyline R34 toddler car

This is by far the best plastic toddler car I have seen so far, the blue Calsonic Skyline R34:

I wish I could have given one of these Calsonic Skyline R34s to my son instead of that horrid Smoby toddler car he got from one of my aunts. What is cooler than having your son imitate the Japanese Grand Touring Championship (JGTC) in your living room? By far one of the greatest treasures to keep in your family album!

This photo was shot by the guy who runs the Restive Horse blog on Minkara and this a gift for his son’s first birthday. You can really see he receives the R34 with great pleasure!

Family Album Treasures: my father with a Mitsubishi Cordia

Family Album Treasures: Mitsubishi Cordia on vacation

I scanned this photo from my fathers family album, so it is literally a Family Album Treasure. ;)
The photo features my father and my brother standing in front of a Mitsubishi Cordia at our first stop somewhere in Belgium:

As the driver side door is open you may think the Cordia is actually my father’s, but then you were tricked by the photo. The car in front of it (a white Peugeot 304 station) and its trailer both are actually my father’s. You can also find a Mazda 323 (Familia) sedan in the background and behind that something that resembles the rear end of a Toyota Celica TA40.

My father sold the Peugeot in the winter of 1985 and traded it in for a 1984 Toyota Carina wagon. I think this photo was taken in the summer of 1985 when we traveled to France with the Peugeot and the trailer. Presumably I took the photo as only the three of us went on holiday. So this really is a family album treasure. ;)

Family Album Treasures: Bell-bottoms Nissan Laurel C130

Bell-bottoms were a big fashion craze throughout the early 70s and the same applied to coke-bottle styling, like on this Nissan Laurel C130, on cars.

The owner Willchan first owned a Nissan Cherry X-1R and then upgraded to this Nissan Laurel 2000GL 6 cylinder KHC130 coupe. The butaketsu (pigsbutt) Laurel looks great with the added fog lights integrated in the grille surrounding.

Given the shape and (less) flare of his bell-bottoms I’d reckon this photo must have been taken late 70s when slowly but surely the bell-bottoms were on its way out. Just like the coke-bottle styling got replaced by the squared off and ruler car designs.
