Remembering Japanese cars from the past

DOTS: disabled Subaru Impreza GT Turbo

Most of the time I don’t take the time to shoot a Subaru Impreza, but this GT Turbo one was a special case. At first I thought the owner parked it on the wrong spot: a parking spot for disabled people.

But when I looked a bit better I spotted the disabled parking “license” behind the windshield:

Of course! People with disabilities drive Impreza GT Turbos too! So, don’t prejudice the owner by the looks of his/her car! ;)

DOTS: Misubishi Starion widebody

I was digging through my old photo archives and found a couple of pictures of cars I spotted down on the street some years ago. Let’s kick off with this widebody Mitsubishi Starion:

Back then I was living in a neighborhood near the center of Amsterdam where parking was free. So a lot of people living in the center of Amsterdam were parking their car opposite to my house, the Starion owner included.

He drove the Starion only once or twice per month and the rest of the time it was just parked there gathering rust/dust, including being parked slant.

The badges told me it was the 4G54 equipped Starion (turbo intercooler) and a quick lookup on the Dutch vehicle registration pages revealed its MOT did expire in 2007. Probably the car is currently in storage or on someones driveway.

The owner did not really take good car of it and after something like eight or nine months I witnessed him selling the Starion on the street opposite to my house.

DOTS: Miata hunting! (part 5)

The past two weeks I wasn’t able to shoot many pictures on the street (except the second pic of this post) due to the snowfall, so time to get back to the Miata hunting!

I found this black second generation MX5 parked in a parkinglot across the street of an apartment complex. I saw it parked there several times after I shot this first pic so the owner probably lives there.

Another second generation MX5. I shot this one two days ago when there was no snowfall. Ironically only 10 minutes after I shot this picture it started snowing.

The picture (and another 5 or 6!) was taken with the crap-cam and due to the lack of light (8:06 in the morning) it looks a bit crappy. I wasn’t in the mood to get into the parkinglot: the parkinglot is owned by the Dutch Evangelical Broadcasting company (EO). Dunno if the owner works there: I only see that car occasionally parked there.

Now, finally a picture not taken with the crap-cam:

Another black MX5 and parked somewhere in Hilversum. This picture was the actual start of the Miata Hunting during summer. This was the third Miata/MX5 I spotted that day and thought it would be a great feature on the site. ;)

DOTS: Toyota MR2 times two!

Somewhere during early October I spotted this immaculate white MR2:

This 1987 MR2 is a USDM import and entered the Netherlands somewhere in 1993. Somehow it surely must have been garaged a lot during its life: my Trueno was imported to the Netherlands during the same era but did not survive the Dutch weather well and the MR2 is renowned to be rust proofed just as bad as the AE86…

I only saw this MR2 once, so I don’t have many pictures of it. As you can see the MR2 is parked in front of building which is under construction. Well the building is still under construction, so maybe the owner will return when everything has been finished. ;)

Red Toyota MR2 mk1

The same day I spotted this faded red MR2 somewhere in a private yard. It is about 150 meters away from the white MR2 and doesn’t have its MOT renewed since 2000… The yard used to be owned by a secondhand car dealer, so maybe this MR2 is a leftover? I’m still thinking about visiting the owner of the place and do some inquiries about the car. :)

DOTS: Eternal rivals: Nissan GTR and Porsche 911 Turbo

Hilversum isn’t particularly the most exciting town to spot Japanese cars in: if you count all the performance/luxury cars in one day you will soon enough find out that most cars are either BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar and Ferrari (big Ferrari dealership here!). So normally when I drive through town it is more or less like this: Porsche, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Jag, etc.

You can imagine the thrill I got when I spotted some big dark Godzilla like car parked in the center of town: a black GTR! But wait, what’s that car in front of it?
Nissan GTR R35 versus Porsche 911 Turbo

Yes: a red 911 Turbo! The eternal rivals! Even facing each other! Head to head! Mano a mano! Were they here to fight out their rivalry?

My heart immediately raised u to 140 beats per minute and I grabbed my crap-cam I always carry around, shot a few shots and then … it died! :(
I ran into the nearest store (the one right behind the GTR and 911), bought a set of batteries (actually two sets since the second set was free) and ran outside. Just in time to see the GTR leave before I was able to fill the crap-cam with the fresh batteries. ?(?`???)?

So, all I got was two semi okay shots which I had to Photoshop to make them look alright and a big pile of batteries… The one in a lifetime chance: I blew it!

Well at least I will have more than enough batteries for the next occasion then! ;)
