Carina Sightings: Yokosuka’s Toyota Carina AA63 for sale

Occasionally I browse Goo-Net to see if there are any interesting Toyota Carinas for sale, like a Carina Jeune or a 20v Carina. So when I spotted Yokosuka’s deep blue Toyota Carina AA63 for sale earlier today I really felt a strong pain in my heart:
Yokosuka's Toyota Carina AA63 GT-R for sale
Why? It is one of the nicest Carinas around and he put so much time and effort in the car!
Yes it really is the same

On the positive side, this allows us to have a peek on all the internals of this beauty: Continue reading

Carina Sightings: Murakami’s Toyota Carina 1800 GT Twin-Cam Turbo

I just got back from three weeks vacation where I packed a couple of unfinished books to read and never expected to find this level of awesomeness in a book! Basically while nearing the end of Haruki Murakami’s Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World I suddenly had a big surprise: he describes a Toyota Carina 1800 GT Twin-Cam Turbo!
Flyrat Toyota Carina 1800 GT Twin-Cam Turbo
The book is first published in 1985, but one of the dates mentioned is Sunday the 2nd of October. The only viable year that features this date is 1983, so the storyline must have taken place in 1983 (S57). The story is what they called cyberpunk back then and encloses a futuristic view on the new technology that gets available in the early 1980s.

Near the end of the book the main character in the story needs to rent a car, preferably an European:
I checked the yellow pages and jotted down the numbers of four car-rental dealerships in the Shinjuku area. None had any European cars. Sundays were high-demand days and they never had foreign cars to begin with. The last dealership had a Toyota Carina 1800 GT Twin-Cam Turbo and a Toyota Mark II. Both new, both with car stereos. I said I’d take the Carina. I didn’t have a crease of an idea what either car looked like.
He made an excellent choice and of course I do have a good idea what either car looks like. ;)

While the story continues and he picks up the car it turns out to be in the white shade. I’ve searched the Google images for a long time to find a suitable face-lifted white Carina TA63 from 1983 that looked (almost) bone stock. The only one I was able to find was this one that got sold by Flyrat a few years ago with ill matching wheels, but other than that in almost original condition: Continue reading

Carina Sightings: Toyota Carina TA63 drag racer

And now for something completely different: a man with a tape-recorder up his nose! a Toyota Carina TA63 drag racer at the Central Circuit:
JDDA West 2013 Toyota Carina TA63
The twin spark single turbo 3T-GTEU has been swapped out in favor of, correct me if I’m wrong, a 2JZ-GTE with a big Trust Greddy T88-34D single turbo.

I have found two videos of this Carina doing runs at the JDDA-West 2013 drag event at the Central Circuit (Taka District, Hyōgo, Japan). The Carina became 7th in its class with 11.106 seconds on the quarter mile. Not the best time of the day and not the fasted on the quarter-mile you have seen before, but it is pretty decent if you think the McLaren MP4-12C is doing the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds.

The first video shows the Carina, its engine and a couple of runs and the second video shows two of those runs.

You can watch the videos below: Continue reading

Carina Sightings: N-Style Toyota Carina AA63 at Speedhunters

I have no idea what has gotten into Dino Dalle Carbonare but lately he seems to be very much into the Toyota Carina AA63! He proved this by posting the N-Style Carina earlier this week on Speedhunters:
N-Style Toyota Carina AA63
The N-Style Carina certainly has seen an overhaul since the last time I posted about it: two tone paintscheme, wilder camber and deeper dish!

I certainly like the new two tone paint scheme! Continue reading

Carina Sightings: Toyota Carina AA63 Coupe

I don’t know exactly what it is, but this Toyota Carina AA63 Coupe is one of my favorite Carinas so far:
Carina Sightings best Coupe ever!
Even though this Carina coupe features the single headlights and the original seats have been replaced by a Bride set I still think it looks awesome!
Perhaps it is the dished rims (anyone know what type/manufacturer they are?) or maybe the side skirts? Or maybe both of them combined remind me of the AE86? (and the Carina being the better looker here! ;) )
