Carina Sightings: Lebanese Carina TA60

I found this drifting Lebanese Carina sedan some time ago on Youtube:

Judging from the looks the drift is initiated by applying the handbrake. It reminds me of how my Carina with open diff currently drifts: getting it sideways by using speed and momentum and praying you can keep it sideways more than half of the corner…

And compared to an AE86 it really looks like you are drifting in slow-motion:

This one is done nicely though:

Anyway, it is nice to find a Carina located somewhere else than Japan, Australia or Europe. I didn’t even know they had them in the middle east! :)

Carina Sightings: Lucky Seven!

Today I own my TA60 Carina for exactly three years! I bought it on the seventh of the seventh of the seventh (07-07-2007), so in other words: lucky seven! This is what the car looked like when I bought it:

You can even see my old AE86 parked in front of it!

I bought the car after my girlfriend (in the meanwhile she became my wife) became pregnant of our son. When test fitting the child seats in the AE86 it was clear that the only way to fit the child seat was to put it in the front seat. Since everyone trying to sit in the back of the AE86 was complaining about every speedbump I took, cramps and more of that I realized it would be impossible to keep the AE86. So I tried to find a four door Cressida, Corona or Carina and found this Carina in a good deal. Basically the TA60 Carina can be considered a four door AE86 with a puny engine: it has (almost) the same axle, the same gearbox, the same steering rack, same front struts and the only difference is the absence of a 4AGE and a LSD!

About the Carina itself: when I bought it it had only 73000 kilometers on the odometer. It had been imported from Germany and I am the third owner of the car. The car belonged to elderly people living near Koln and the car is exactly how you would expect elderly people to buy a car in the early 80s: lowest spec possible and automatic. :(
Actually the car having an automatic gearbox saved the Carina from being exported to Africa: they only want manual cars for export to Africa.

The car is basically still the same as when I bought it: it still has the same engine, autobox and open diff. Only upgrades done were shocks, brakes (mintex up front), Marchal yellow foglights and Celica XX alloys. I do have plans for engine and gearbox swap, but I still haven’t made up my mind yet on which engine and gearbox… Could be a 4AGE, 2TG or even an 18R-G.

Normally it is impossible to get it sideways, but on rainy days this car is a hoot and I love it when I manage to get it sliding! Also people do not expect such an old clunker to do stuff like that and certainly not a family car! The car learned me much more than the AE86 could ever have done! ;)

The Carina brought me luck so far: never had to spend large sums of money on it and it only failed on me once because I neglected to buy gas in time… Currently the age of the car is showing its toll: the bootlid and the roof have start to show some rust so there is definitely a need for a respray sometime soon!

And this is how the Carina looked this morning at 6:00:

She is cheerful, isn’t she?

Carina Sightings: Bosozoku Style Carina coupe

I already posted this Carina on Bosozokustyle.com last monday, but I really have to share it here! The Carina is a bit hard to detect under all that extra bodywork, but if you look close enough you will surely recognize it as a Carina coupe! To be more exact: it is the white car @0:10, 0:15, 0:24, 3:06, 3:12, so more than enough opportunities to see it! ;)

Initially I thought there was a Toyota Celica A60 underneath all those spoilers and wings. With the front and rear section gone it was a bit hard to see: the mid section of the A60 is shared between the Ceclia and Carina coupe and they are almost identical to eachother. The headlights kind of revealed it to me: the parkinglights in the middle were gone. Then I looked at the doorhandles, sure enough they are older type sticking out of the bodywork and not sunken into the door. And last I saw the vertical stripes on the B pilar which was only on the Carina and not on the Celica.

I have been searching several sites for more videos/pictures of this car, but so far none of my searches have proved to be fruitful. When I do find more on this car I’ll certainly post more about it! :)

Carina Sightings: Carina crowd at NYM 2010

A few weeks back I already featured some pictures by Michinoku Grand at the HistoriX Japan meeting and during some browsing of his Photozou archives I came across a Carina crowd at the New Year Meeting 2010 in Odaiba:

Four Carina’s may not be that impressive, but given the age of the Carina A60 and the amount of cars at the meeting it is actually quite a lot! ;)

Michinoku Grand did like the black Carina van a lot:

And so do I!

Also note the rims on Carina sedan behind it: they look exactly like the Atiwe telephone rims on the European AE86 Haslback trim. They could very well be some licensed JDM manufactured rims of course. ;)

And another shot of that great looking Carina van! Why didn’t my dad paint his Carina van black in 1985? It sure does look better than gold! :P

Carina Sightings: Kyusha Kai Carina GT-TR

I found this kyusha kai styled Carina GT-TR on a spring meeting of a few other Carinas on Carview. I think this is definitely the coolest Carina I saw so far:
Kyusha Kai Carina GT-TR TA63

Lowered, black fender extenders, gunmetal grey RS Watanabe rims, rollcage, bride seat, etc. etc…

Now that Carina alone would have been a great post by itself, but then I spotted this picture of a Carina A60 sticker:
I want this Carina sticker!
I want this Carina A60 sticker!

The coolest thing ever!! Now let’s see if I can lay my hands upon one! :)

Carina Sightings: Emil and Thomas at Gardemoen

Emil and Thomas are from Norway and took their Carina TA60 sedans out on the Gardemoen ice track. Too bad Emil and Thomas used a copyrighted song for this video, but nevertheless it really looks like they are having fun in the snow (and ice):

It may not be suitable for the faint hearted, the ending is very bad for one of the Carinas… :(
